TIISETSO COMMUNITY PROJECTS

From Survival to Significance

Tiitseto Community Projects Nonprofit Company was established to develop the Thabo Mbeki Informal Settlement and adjacent areas. The intention to support this community inspired the name of the organization, Tiisetso meaning: perseverance.

The Skills Development Centre forms the primary mechanism for enabling the community. This has become a hub of coaching, mentoring, training, and work exposure and incorporates skills, personal and social development activities, and emergency interventions.

LifeHouse Church assists Tiisetso Community Projects work in the Thabo Mbeki Community, where we build relationally and partner with key community leaders in bringing the gospel and helping affect social transformation.

  • Every Thursday evening a team of people go through to help assist the school children with their homework - no experience is needed just loving attention!

An afterschool homework assistance program is run by volunteers from the Fourways area.

Every Thursday afternoon from 5-6 pm does tutorship in various subjects. Math and science seem to be the primary need. Students greatly benefit from this program and the passing rate has drastically improved.

Approximately 30 children are being tutored.

  • Residents from Thabo showing an interest in farming are interviewed, trained, and given the opportunity to manage the food tunnels set up next to the Tiisetso Skills Centre. Vegetables and worm tea are sold to the residents providing an income to the farmers.

3 Farmers are currently managing 7 food tunnels providing food for approximately 60 people.

  • Tiisetso has since 2019 hosted approximately 4 soccer and netball tournaments annually.

With the assistance of local businesses donating the use of their earth-moving equipment a local soccer and netball field was established. The tournaments that have been held, have proved to be successful and are a highlight in the village.

Approximately 250 youth are engaged in this program.

  • About 30 vulnerable children receive a bowl of food three times a week. Vegetables from the food tunnel supplemented with donations of maize and rice serves are used as ingredients

  • Tiisetso has engaged with sponsors and building contractors to start upgrading these schools and to lay piping for the water supply.

Preschool graduation ceremonies are a big highlight in every child and parent’s life and Tiisetso has partnered with sponsors to enhance the quality of these ceremonies.

Approximately 10 teachers and 60 children benefited.

  • This program assists approximately 80 frail and elderly with basic domestic needs such as blanket washing, house cleaning, food provision, counselling, and medical care.

  • The Skills Centre has become a business incubator with new businesses starting regularly.

Eg: Tekkie washing, garden service, vegetable sales, bead making, a Kota restaurant, sowing, chicken egg sales, earthworm tea sales etc.

Approximately 20 work opportunities have been created so far.

  • After becoming aware of the reality that many women and young girls have experienced trauma such as rape, abuse, etc., a weekly counselling service from the Centre was.

This outreach is producing tremendous fruit and woman are experiencing emotional support and assistance in their time of need.
